Allison was showing signs of a little head cold on Tuesday. A little stuffy nose and mild non productive cough. I'm familiar with Shane's asthma cough and it was kinda like that in that it was non productive but it sounded different. I thought maybe the beginnings of croup but I don't have any experice with croup to know for sure. I put her to bed Wednesday night as usual and finally fell asleep at 11:00pm. At 11:45 I was woken up by her screaming/crying. I thought her teeth were bothering her so I scooped her up and layed her on my chest in bed. I could tell as soon as she calmed down that something wasn't right. She was struggling to breathe. And each breath she took was labored and her chest was retracting and making the oddest squealing sound. I layed her down and woke Brian to let him know I was taking her to the ER. I know with my experice with Shane it gets bad quick. I checked her pulse ox and it was 89 and 92. Super low as I know with Shane they wouldn't release form hospital unless above 95. Could I have given her a breathing treatment at home yes- but she needed something more.
Arrived at the ER in 8 mins. But even though we were the only ones waiting it took 30 to go back into a room (was not happy about that). She is at a difficult age for the scariness of all the machines and doctors. Her pulse ox when we got the the hospital was 92. They ordered oral steriods, breathing treatment and X-rays (to rule out pneumonia) she did great with all three (which I was shocked because she freaked at the pulse ox monitor on her toe).
X-rays were clear so no pneumonia. Diagnosis was Bronchitis caused by a virus (such as RSV/ but they never tested for RSV). Inflammation of the airways that carry air to your lungs. So we will have a few days of steriods and breathing treatments and follow up with her dr tomorrow.
Hoping this was an isolated incident and not cold related asthma like Shane gets.
Here is my little patient last night being a trooper.
Watching cartoons
Fell asleep right before xray tech came
Enjoyed the ride
Eating ice chips
Smiling
Breathing treatment
Getting ready to go home
Since I use my blog as somewhat of a baby book I wanted to have this documented. She is doing much better and was a trooper through it all. I on the other hand now have a second gray hair because of it... Like one wasn't enough!!!
