How Things Change in an Instant

Sunday the boys were running around and both had a clear runny nose and mild cough. They coughed like once an hour..if that. Well mid morning Shane was REALLY clingy. Were I got nothing done because he would cry and whine and cry and whine unless I was holding him. John was fine, playing and active. Around 6pm Shane and I were sitting on the couch and I was holding him watching a show. I felt that he was warm and took his temp (102.0) I noticed with my hand on his chest that his heart beat was REALLY fast. So I tried to track it, but it was hard. But I knew it just wasn't normal for him. Along with that I noticed shortness of breath. Each breath was like a struggle. That was my biggest concern. Brian was at a friends watching the Jets game, so I was sitting there debating on what to do. Finally I just said let me put them both to bed and I will take him to the dr in the morning (after giving Shane Tylenol). About an hour later I still heard Shane up (he typically falls asleep within 10 mins of being put down and if not its because he has a poopy diaper) so I decided I would just take him into bed with me and he could sleep there. He still felt warm (Tylenol hadn't taken his fever down) So we laid down and he was really really restless. He wouldn't settle down. About 5 mins later he projectile vomited all over my bed..twice. So I swept him up cleaned him off and put him into the car on the way to the ER.

We got to the ER and he had blood taken and a chest x-ray and a flu test (any flu test that comes back pos is being assumed swine because its too early for seasonal..so I was told). They started a breathing treatment on him through the neubulizer and we waited. After the dr listen to his lungs, she had a feeling he might be staying (just by the comment she said). At this time I was thinking Bronchitis. We waited about an hour and were told that he had pneumonia. The flu test was negative. His WBC was 20,000 and should of been 10. And his O2 levels were 89/90 and should be 97ish at the very least 94. So she wanted to start IV antibiotic and have him admitted. So he was admitted and continued to be evaluated. Had breathing treatments every 4 hours around the clock. The first night his O2 levels were low.. 89/90 so the next day they started a Oxygen tank (plastic tent that goes in the crib and provides a mist and oxygen) that was fun...not!! So he saw many drs and was confined to a tiny area because he was so tied up with wires. The first night his IV wire kept getting kinked and the alarm for the machine went off every 20 mins, so I got no sleep. They did another splint the second day so it was a little better, but still went off alot. He had more antibiotics the second night and was monitored around the clock.

Thanks to all our family and friends for all the support. We had nice visits from Mimi, Opa and Uncle Shad. We got some cute gifts from our friends in California and Mimi, Opa and Uncle Shad that kept Shane entertained while we stayed. All the prayers and thoughts for our little man were greatly apprieciated..via phone, email, text and facebook!!

I am so thankful that he is feeling and doing better. It was really scary how fast his symptoms changed on Sunday. He is acting like his normal self already.

Things to Come

Its only the middle of October and we have already had our first new snow of the season. I guess its a little insight of what is to come. I was completely taken by surprise, as I think were most. It was fun to watch the boys experience the first snow of the season and see how their reactions differed from last year. John gets it. He understands what it is and why its so cold. Shane was in awe. He loved watching it, catching it, eating it, and playing in it.

We are chugging right along with our weekly activities. Lots of fun school time for John. He loves and adores school- if I haven't mentioned that before. Just the other night as he was in bed (early because both him and his brother decided to misbehave and get sent to bed early) I listened in on the monitor to his conversation he was having with himself. Talking about each kid in his class and where they would "sit". It went something like this... "ok, John you sit here, Brady you sit over here, Brian you sit next to John, Maggie your over here, Olivia and Savatore you sit here, Abby sits over here, Nehamiah can sit next to Maggie, Chase here, ....... it was adorable as he sat there and recited each childs name.

Shane loves the one on one time he gets with Mommy these days, as does Mommy. Its so nice to do things and not have two kids bickering the whole time. Now I know what my mom went through...well kinda...I am sure there is a lot more to come!!

I have been volunteering a lot at John's school. Either with Drop Off duty, Lunch Duty or other help needed (recent Tricky Tray). It is something I truly enjoy.

We have also been busy with Shane's bouncearama class, gymnastics at Shutz for both boys, MOPS (a great group I discovered this year that meets twice a month and the boys go into their specific age classroom/nursery and the mommy's go into the meeting hall and have 2 hours of uninterupted adult time where we follow a curiculum and have guest speakers and such), we also have various play groups, pumpkin picking and apple picking festivities. Its a big month with a calendar filled with Halloween parties and activities and I can't wait to experience it with them!

Pumpkin Picking 2009

A brisk fall day was perfect for our Pumpkin Picking venture this year. The boys favorite part was the tractor ride to the pumpkin patch for sure. But they did have fun exploring and picking the perfect pumpkin. I was quite bummed that I forgot my camera and only had my point and shoot with next to no battery life left. I did still manage to capture a few shots from our day. It was fun to look back and see how little they were Last Year . We didn't carve them yet, as it is still early and we didn't want them to rot prematurely

Fire Awareness Week

I think its very important to learn about Fire Safety. I remember it very well from what I learned during my school days. Johnny now knows all about Stop- Drop- Roll from the Fire Awareness Assembly at his school last week. Also a nice bonus to see the fire truck and ambulance.

Johnny Appleseed and His Side Kick

Johnny has become quite the pro at apple picking. He has gone a total of two times this year and two last year, and one the year before. But he loves it and we do pick some great apples. And we are very partial to apple pie ;) But this year Shane got to really enjoy it.

Last year he was just a little lad in my back pack (oh that was a lot of fun for my body) and the year before that he was a little tadpole in my belly.

2008
2007

But this year he got right in on the action.

Granted, I think his favorite part was the tractor ride. I haven't seen him that well behaved and still and memorized in....well...ever. He loved the tractor ride and freaked out a bit when it was time to get off and get apples.

Both boys enjoyed filling mommy's bag with apples. The bags they wanted to carry, until the apples were dropped in.

Apple picking and fall is one of my favorite times of the year and I cherish this time with my boys. I know it won't last forever!
